Recently, Corobrik had the privilege of hosting members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Reserve Force for a graduation ceremony, marking the successful completion of a four-week bricklaying course. This course was more than just an educational endeavour—it was a part of the SANDF's broader commitment to equipping its Reserve Force members with practical, life-changing skills.
The four-week bricklaying course was designed to empower the SANDF Reserve Force members with vital skills that will allow them to make a positive impact in their communities, and open new employment opportunities beyond their military service.
One of the participants shared his excitement about the course, saying, “The lessons I learned here, including concreting foundations and starting corners, were key. I learned that there are principles you must always know—spirit levels, squares, and dump levels. I know there is much more to learn, but I especially enjoyed working with Clay Face Brick from Corobrik.”
The Major overseeing the training emphasized the significance of this reskilling initiative: “The members being trained are Reserve Force Members who are not permanently employed with the SANDF. When they’re not on duty, they may find themselves at home with little to do. By reskilling them, we hope they will find jobs when not called out, or after completing their service with the SANDF. These skills can also be invaluable within the SANDF for maintaining or upgrading our own structures.”
The ripple effect of reskilling is profound. It’s not just about the individual; it’s about the broader impact on their families, their communities, and ultimately, the nation. As one Reserve Force member gains valuable skills, they carry those abilities home, where they can share them with their families and use them for community development. When you invest in one person’s future, you invest in the future of an entire community.
